The Brussels Minister of Mobility and Public Works, Mr. Pascal Smet, and his accompanying delegation met the Deputy Mayor, Mr. Jawdi Abu Sneineh, and Members from Hebron's Municipal Council.
To get a view of Hebron's different conditions, and to discuss cooperation opportunities were among issues put forward at the meeting. Mr. Abu Sneineh welcomed the delegation and conveyed the regards of Hebron Mayor, Dr. Daoud Zatari. He spoke about Hebron's historical significance, the city's political condition and its division into two parts, H1 and H2. Also, he referred to the Israeli illegal and violent practices that have been committed against the innocent citizens who live in the heart of Hebron's Old City, and put lights on the attempts to displace the local population and to increase settlement activity.
In this context, Mr. Abu Sneineh touched on the closing down of Al-Shuhada Street to Palestinians which is considered as the main street in the Old City of Hebron, and how it affected the economic and the commercial condition of the city.
" the Isareli Control over lands that locate in Area C prevents achieving sustainable local development, especially in Hebron District which is in dare need for spaces to keep pace with the growth in population as well as with urban expansion", added the Deputy Mayor.
Moreover, Mr. Abu Sneineh said that Hebron Municipality in line with its strategic plan aimed at contracting a tunnel at the Northern Entrance of city with a view to alleviating the traffic jam and to regulating vehicular traffic.
The Belgian Delegation then toured the Old City and areas adjacent to the Ibrahimi Mosques and Settlement.
