Dr. Dauod Zatari, Mayor of Hebron, met on the 26th of June at his office the president of the European Union mission to help and support the Palestinian police, the police adviser 'PerHeide Sorensen’, accompanied by the police adviser 'Frank Mueller’. The meeting discussed the political and security situation in the city of Hebron and areas of mutual cooperation.
Dr. Zatari started the meeting by discussing the political situation, the division of the city and the control of the southern region by the Israeli occupation and the barriers they pose to prevent Palestinian police from performing their tasks in the city. In addition, the violations committed by the Israeli occupation against Palestinian citizens and the continuos attacks by settlers in the old town and the surrounding settlements were discussed.
Furthermore, the Mayor focused on the difficulties that face the Municipality of Hebron as a result of the obstacles set by the Israeli authorities against the Hebron Municipality crews while performing developmental tasks and providing service to the citizens in the southern region; as coordination and approval from the Israeli forces is required in advance.
In addition, Dr. Zatari illustrated the hard work and effort that Palestinian police execute in order to maintain the security and safety of citizens and to facilitate the traffic, despite the small number of its members compared to the population of the city, the ed resources and the lack of logistical support which s their ability to perform their tasks. Thus, the Mayor stressed the need to support the Palestinian police to build the capacity of its members and raise the level of qualifications in the areas of contact with the local community to strengthen its role, advancement in the field of technology and more logistical support to keep pace with the steady development of the world.
On the other hand, Sorensen demonstrated their understanding of the needs perceived by the Palestinians and stated that they are working to assist the Palestinian police and support them in order to improve the lives of Palestinians, and implement scientific methods in police work.
In addition, he expressed his pleasure visit Hebron and to meet the Mayor Dr. Dauod Zatari who was understanding and cooperative; hoping to strengthen cooperative relations in order to help achieve the goal of the mission.
