Hebron mayor Khaled Osaily met with a delegation of Canadian Parliamentarians comprising Richard Nadean, Borys Wrzesnewskyj and Libby Davies, as well as with the Canadian Representative to the Palestinian Authority, Graeme Mclntyre, the Journalist Kim Ellot and other representatives from Canadian Institutions. Richard Nadean, a Parliamentarian from Québec, described the situation in Hebron caused by the continuous Israeli occupation and the presence of Israeli settlers as much worst when seen in reality than what is depicted by the media. He added that nobody can tolerate living under such circumstances and that he completely understands the needs of Palestinians, their rights for self determination and for political stability.
Mayor Osaily discussed with the delegation both political and security conditions in the Palestinian Territories and in Hebron in particular. He stressed the economic and human hardships caused by Israeli checkpoints between Palestinian cities, villages and Governorates. Osaily talked about the situation in the Old City as well as about policies implemented by the Israeli military occupation including closures, curfews, closing of businesses and pressure to drive Palestinians out of their homes. Osaily added that despite all negative Israeli measures, the municipality is determined to build up the city and simultaneously develop various sectors. He stressed the need to develop facilities for young people who constitute a majority of the population.
Mayor Osaily also touched on the political situation. He said that the current Palestinian leadership is committed to peace and considers it a strategic choice, but that Israel continues to swallow Palestinian lands, build more settlements, erect the segregation wall, and put obstacles in the way of peace and the possibility for Palestinians to live a peaceful stable life.
The delegation showed compassion towards the Palestinian cause and stressed that the reason for their visit is to examine the situation in the Palestinian territories and to work towards achieving peace so that Palestinians can live in freedom and peace. Both parties discussed collaboration and exchange options between Hebron and various Canadian provinces.
